Six Picks: Weezer, Scissor Sisters, ‘Hysteria,”Big River,’ Cosmic Gate, dining in the dark

Weezer

You could argue that Weezer is a ’90s version of the Beach Boys (We’re talking about the more-complex-than-it-seems pop, not the haircuts). So they’d seem a fun band to see on a beach, which you can do at 9 p.m. today at Mandalay Bay’s wade-up stage. Tickets are $55; call 632-7580.

Scissor Sisters

How much fun are debauched disco subverts the Scissor Sisters? Well, they’re like an open bar incarnate. Drink ’em up at 9 p.m. today at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Tickets are $36; call 632-7600.

– Jason Bracelin

‘Hysteria’

Whatever you do, don’t confuse it with “Rock of Ages,” another movie hitting theaters today that shares its name with a Def Leppard song. “Hysteria” is the delightful Victorian-era romantic comedy starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy and Rupert Everett – from Sony Pictures Classics, no less – about the invention of the vibrator. Yes, really.

– Christopher Lawrence

‘Big River’

The Las Vegas Academy’s production of “Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is headed for the prestigious Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Neb., at month’s end. But you’ve got three more chances to catch the musical at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and June 22 at the Lowden Theater for the Performing Arts, Ninth Street and Clark Avenue. Tickets are $18; go to www.lvacademytheatre.org for ticket information.

Eclipse dining

It’s not generally a good thing to think a chef or restaurant owner is keeping you in the dark, but in this case it’s an adventure: Mood restaurant at the Artisan, 1501 W. Sahara Ave., presents the Eclipse Dark Dining Experience, which, organizers say, keeps customers “in the dark” about the ingredients so they can focus on the food. You do get to choose a general theme – meat, seafood, veggie or mixed – and the three-course, two-hour experience is $80 per person (www.TasteInTheDark.com).

Cosmic Gate

German trance duo Cosmic Gate returns to Marquee nightclub tonight. One of the guys, Stefan Bossems, relocated to Las Vegas to be closer to the action here. They are quite fun. Opening DJ: Wippenberg.
