Six Picks: Our experts pick their favorites for the week

Heather McDonald

Heather McDonald is a "Chelsea Lately" writer and panelist who brings a mom’s perspective to the party. But she’s a comedian mom, so the book that comes out in February is called "My Inappropriate Life." You can help wrap up her year today and Saturday at the South Point. Tickets are $15-$25 for the 7:30 p.m. shows; call 797-8055.

Jello Biafra

For the first time in his band’s long history of playing shows, Reverend Horton Heat frontman Jim Heath will step away from the mic and let someone else sing. And who might that be? None other than punk icon/former Dead Kennedys mouthpiece Jello Biafra. How’s that for a holiday gift? See them at 9 p.m. today at Vinyl at the Hard Rock Hotel, 4455 Paradise Road. Tickets are $25; call 693-5000.

‘Argo’

There are no new releases in theaters this weekend, but while everyone’s busy reflecting on the year that was, it’s a perfect time to revisit one of 2012’s first major Oscar contenders: "Argo." Directed by Ben Affleck and set during the Iran hostage crisis, it’s part "Ocean’s Eleven," part "The Great Escape," with just a touch of "The Diary of Anne Frank."

Neon Museum

If you’ve had enough of Christmas lights this season, check out some lights for all seasons: the more than 150 historic, nostalgic, fanciful and just plain fascinating displays at the downtown’s Neon Museum, 770 Las Vegas Blvd. North. It’s closed Sundays (and on Tuesday, New Year’s Day), but otherwise you’re good to glow from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays; book a tour online at www.neonmuseum.org.

Steak special

We’re all hoping for a better 2013 but no doubt we’re still going to be watching the budget . P.J. Clarke’s at the Forum Shops at Caesars is offering some assistance in that regard, with a $99-for-two steak special that includes a bottle of wine. The menu offers a choice of New England clam chowder or Caesar salad, Delmonico steak with twin lobster tails or sliced prime porterhouse and cheesecake or bread pudding, and a choice from among six wines. Call 434-7900.

DJ madness

The club lineup for New Year’s Eve weekend looks like an Electric Daisy Carnival, starring Kaskade, Skrillex, Deadmau5, Calvin Harris and dozens of other superstar DJs. See club coverage inside for the whole crazy list, which includes Avicii’s Monday show at club XS, where he’ll certainly play one of the songs of the year, his inescapable hit "Levels."
