Six Picks: Our experts pick their favorites for the week

Celine Dion

Celine Dion can fill the Colosseum at Caesars Palace any time, so one of the slowest weekends of the year shouldn’t be any different. Those looking for star power on the Strip are grateful to have her. And if you don’t dig her hits? Fear not. Her show covers Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Jackson and even James Bond movie themes. Even “Skyfall”? Find out at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sunday or Wednesday. Tickets are $55-$250; call 877-423-5463.

Babilos

Vegas thrashers Babilos are reuniting after nearly a two-year hiatus. Will this be their last show? Who knows, but considering the aorta-exploding energy of their live gigs, it just may be yours. See them at 8 p.m. today at the Cheyenne Saloon, 3103 N. Rancho Drive. Tickets are $5; call 645-4139.

‘Promised Land’

Think of it as “Erin Brockovich” in reverse. Matt Damon and Frances McDormand travel the country, convincing impoverished rural homeowners to sell their natural gas rights despite knowing full well the dangers of the extraction process known as fracking, in “Promised Land.” The pleasantly old-fashioned drama, directed by Gus Van Sant, was written by Damon and co-star John Krasinski.

First Friday

It’s 2013, but the new year’s first First Friday goes back a century – and beyond – with an Art Nouveau theme. Circus Circus’ Chuck Jones Experience is now presenting the KidZone, and warming stations (and hot crafted cocktails) will help scenesters brave the January chill from 5 to 10 p.m. today in downtown’s Arts District. Slice of pie

Joe’s Stone Crab at the Forum Shops at Caesars is known for its stone crab, of course (and we’re in the middle of that season right now), but it’s also known for its variety of pies baked in-house. And if you buy a slice of Joe’s butterscotch pie by the end of the month, $1 from the price of your slice will be donated to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Lil Jon

Lil Jon – the man you know best as “Yeahhh!” – gets behind the DJ booth again tonight, to spin hits and scream “yeah” at Surrender nightclub in the Encore. Not only is Lil Jon a party animal, he is quite popular with some other DJ-producers.
