Six Picks: Isley Brothers, Lagwagon, ‘A Separation,’ First Friday, fish fry, Lazy Rich

Isley Brothers

Their ranks have thinned over the years, but Ronald and Ernie still keep the Isley Brothers an institution that goes into their seventh decade, with hits spanning from “Twist and Shout” in 1962 through “Contagious” with R. Kelly. They’ll be “Livin’ in the Life” at 9 p.m. today and Saturday at the LVH (formerly the Hilton). Tickets are $70.85-$104.95; call 732-5755.

Lagwagon

Lagwagon trades in the kind of sunbaked, ceaselessly hooky, fast and not-so-furious punk that SoCal has long been known for — and the region’s known for as much because of bands like Lagwagon. See them at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Las Vegas Country Saloon, 425 Fremont St. Tickets are $18; call 382-3849.

‘A Separation’

Iran’s government may make people nervous these days, but Oscar voters had no such reservations about Iran’s “A Separation,” which just won an Academy Award for best foreign-language film — and opens at the Suncoast today. The wrenching drama focuses on a divided couple, torn between leaving Iran to improve their child’s life or staying to look after an Alzheimer’s-afflicted parent.

First Friday

Lucky Lady Lucy, a 20-foot-tall wooden showgirl sculpture, won’t be so lucky when she gets consumed in flames at “Vegas Burn,” which will be part of March’s First Friday festivities at 8 p.m. today at Casino Center Boulevard and Colorado Avenue.

Fish fry

In some cities, dozens of churches sponsor fish fries during Lent. That tradition has never caught on in Las Vegas, but at least one local group has staked a beachhead. Every remaining Friday during Lent — extending through March 30 — the Knights of Columbus council at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is hosting a fish fry from 4 to 7 p.m. It’s $6 per person, and all proceeds support St. Therese’s Center for people with HIV/AIDS. The center is at 4765 Brussels St., on the UNLV campus.
