Last moon walker, astronaut Gene Cernan, visits Crystals

Everyone’s heard of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon.

But do you know the last guy who walked on the moon? That’s Capt. Gene Cernan, the commander of Apollo 17, which conducted its lunar landing mission in 1972. That was the last time the United States sent astronauts to the moon.

You can meet Cernan Friday in Crystals at CityCenter, 3720 Las Vegas Blvd. South. Cernan will be there with two other astronauts, Lt. Gen. Thomas Stafford and Brig. Gen. Charlie Duke, giving a talk to school kids and the public.

The free event is hosted by Crystals and Tourbillon boutique, which sells Omega watches, the official space watch of NASA. All of the astronauts wore them during their space trips. They will talk about their space travels, the watches and other topics during the discussion panel from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The story goes that NASA used the watches because they keep such precise time and the re-entry of NASA space vessels into earth’s atmosphere had to be timed to the second, notes a Crystals spokeswoman.

Some cool watches also will be on display — including the Omega Speedmaster watches, the only watch ever worn to the moon — along with a lunar rover, an Apollo 10 spacesuit and a Mars rover.

Crystals plans to host more events like this in the future, especially things that might appeal to locals, says general manager Farid Matraki.

The public exhibit runs through Friday.
