Diplo among DJs spinning this weekend

Tonight’s headliner at XS nightclub is Diplo. He’s a top DJ-producer in his own right, but he is also known for having dated M.I.A. for five years, and co-writing her signature hit, “Paper Planes.”

Diplo’s real name is Thomas Wesley Pentz, he’s 34, and he’s from Tupelo, Miss., and Florida (but he has no Southern accent). After studying film at Temple University, he co-directed the film “Favela on Blast,” a well-received documentary of the music and music culture in the squatter communities of Rio de Janeiro.

As a musician, Diplo has collaborated with Major Lazer, Beyonce, Shakira, Bruno Mars and Snoop Dogg. His original songs, such as “Set It Off” and “Express Yourself,” are difficult to pigeonhole, since they mesh dance beats and melodies from electronic music, hip-hop and international rhythms.
