Methodology in madness for alt-rockers Young the Giant

Competence, craftsmanship, professionalism.

Those words, when applied to a rock band, are about as sexy as the lingerie offerings in a Kohl’s circular.

They imply methodology over artistry, formula over feeling.

Still, we’re not trying to put down SoCal rockers Young the Giant when we associate said descriptions with the band.

The group’s latest record, “Mind Over Matter,” registers immediately as smartly constructed, radio-ready alt-rock with judiciously placed synth lines that brighten their songs without dominating them, guitars that lay back in the mix before slashing forth at just the right moment and a frontman, Sameer Gadhia, who emotes without sounding as if he was trying to pass his heart through his larynx.

Yeah, it does feel a little paint-by-numbers at times, but hey, at least they’re working with plenty of inviting hues.
