Creed playing ‘Human Clay’ at Pearl

Before Nickelback earned the unofficial tag as mainstream radio rock’s least cool band – a designation that often translates to heaps of record sales, willing groupies and sold-out arenas – there was Creed, the preferred pinata for music critics and rock snobs alike.

Oh, how they whacked at Scott Stapp and Co. – the messianic poses, the pompous piousness, the grunge lite toothlessness – and out spilled platinum records in place of dime store candy.

The band was an easy target subject to frequent overkill – like blasting a fruit fly with a shotgun.

But in the end, Creed got over on their detractors, as way more people listened to them than futzy music hacks, with the band selling tens of millions of albums.

On their current tour, the group will be playing its biggest record, sophomore effort “Human Clay,” in its entirety.

Some will make fun.

Creed will make money.

This was likely the whole point to begin with.
