‘Tinker Tailor’ hitting big screen

The movie: “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”

When: Opening Friday at local theaters

Cast: Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy, Toby Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch

Director: Tomas Alfredson

The story: During the Cold War, veteran British spy George Smiley is forced into retirement — until he’s called upon, by a senior government official, to find a suspected Soviet mole within the ranks of senior espionage agents.

The buzz: John le Carre’s celebrated (and cerebral) novel finally reaches the big screen, but it’s hardly the first adaptation of the spy thriller. Alec Guinness played Smiley in a 1979 BBC miniseries that also featured Ian Bannen and Ian Richardson (in the roles now played by Strong and Firth, respectively).
