First Look: ‘Sparkle’ marks Houston’s final performance

The movie: “Sparkle”

When: Opening Friday at local theaters

Cast: Jordin Sparks, Whitney Houston, Derek Luke, Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter and CeeLo Green

Director: Salim Akil

The story: In 1968 Detroit, a trio of sisters (Sparks, Ejogo and Sumpter) seems destined for fame as a singing group, despite the objections of their mother (Houston), in this remake of the 1976 drama that starred Irene Cara.

The buzz: Even though she’s not the star – “American Idol’s” Sparks plays the title role – “Sparkle” could have been Houston’s comeback. Now it always will be remembered as her final performance.
