First Look: ‘Pitch Perfect’ tries to hit all the right notes

What: “Pitch Perfect”

When: Opening Friday

Cast: Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow, John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks

Director: Jason Moore

The story: A college freshman (Kendrick) reluctantly joins her school’s all-girl singing group and convinces her fellow singers to dump their traditional arrangements in favor of all-new mash-ups before they take on their male rivals.

The buzz: Universal obviously is high on it. The studio is opening it locally at only Red Rock, Sam’s Town and Town Square in hopes that positive word of mouth will spread before it goes into wider release Oct. 5. But it sounds a lot like “Glee.” And viewers have been fleeing that in droves.
