First Look: ‘Oblivion’ transports Cruise to future

What: “Oblivion”

When: Opening Friday

Cast: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko and Melissa Leo

Director: Joseph Kosinski

The story: In 2077, a security repairman (Cruise) is two weeks shy of evacuating a ruined Earth and joining the rest of humanity on a lunar colony. Then he rescues a stranger (Kurylenko) who turns what’s left of his world upside down in this adaptation of Kosinski’s graphic novel.

The buzz: It sure feels like summer’s starting early this year. “Oblivion” has the look and feel of a movie that, even four or five years ago, would have planted its flag in the middle of July, not April.
