Jazz the way you like it

Jazzheads have two vastly different options this weekend, and they’re right around the corner from each other.

Do you prefer your jazz trad or smooth?

On Friday, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will share the Reynolds Hall stage at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts with The Del McCoury Band.

The keepers of two distinctly American musical styles, representing traditional jazz and Appalachian bluegrass, came together for 2011’s “American Legacies” recording.

Tickets for their 7:30 p.m. Friday co-headlining concert are $26-$79. Call 749-2000 or see www.thesmithcenter.com.

The next night, guitarist Earl Klugh will perform as part of the Jazz in the Park concert series at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

Klugh, who traffics in smooth jazz, crossover jazz and jazz fusion, is the penultimate performer in Clark County’s 24th annual series.

Seating begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, with the performance scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Admission to Jazz in the Park is free, and picnic baskets, blankets and low-back chairs are allowed. For more information, call 455-8200.

Just don’t get the two events confused. Although you should find plenty of people willing to take your money at the free outdoor event, we’re guessing The Smith Center frowns on picnics inside Reynolds Hall.

Brews & Blues

It’s tough to determine who gets top billing at the Springs Preserve’s fourth annual Brews & Blues Festival Saturday.

If you’re on the blues team, go for the live music. Performances start at 4 p.m. with Twice as Good, followed by Scott Rhiner and the Moanin’ Blacksnakes (4:55 p.m.), the Diane Kallay Band (5:50 p.m.) and Dennis Jones (6:45 p.m.).

And for brew crew members, local, regional, domestic and international labels are represented, from Las Vegas’ own Triple 7 Brewpub, Tenaya Creek and Big Dogs to Japan’s Asahi.

Either way, one of the festival’s winners is Keep Memory Alive; a portion of ticket sales benefits the organization, which supports the mission of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health.
