The Colorado River provides varied opportunities for rafting adventures through the spectacular canyons it has carved. Rafting options fall into two categories — one-day trips on accessible stretches of the river and multi-day tours through the mighty Grand Canyon of three days to two weeks or longer.

Those who poke around in the desert Southwest long enough encounter strange, mysterious and even inexplicable places. Such sites include the enormous figures created by people of ancient cultures living along the Colorado River near present-day Blythe, Calif. The artists of prehistory left behind rock art sites called geoglyphs or intaglios that lay undiscovered by non-natives until spotted from the air by a pilot in 1932.

Sculpted of snow and ice, imaginative shapes emerge at Cave Lake State Park during the annual White Pine Fire and Ice Festival slated for Jan. 14-16. Vying for prize money, teams of sculptors let their imaginations loose to produce creations that range from single fantastic figures to groups of shapes, some elegantly beautiful, others drawing smiles. The event culminates with a fireworks show at 6 p.m. Jan. 16, after judging is complete.
