CELEBRITY WEEKEND PREVIEW SEPT. 8-10

Just because football season is underway and sports books get busy with bets doesn’t mean our weekend entertainment attractions go quiet. However, on a weekend when Jennifer Lopez dazzles at Planet Hollywood Resort and the megastar lineup expands at our nightclubs there’s a selection of non-showbiz events, most connected to food, that will grab the spotlight.

Don’t forget that last night (Sept. 7) legendary boxer Mike Tyson pulled off the gloves for Round 2 of his “Undisputed Truth,” a one-man life story in Brad Garrett’s comedy club at MGM Grand. His return to the stage focuses on the ups and downs of his tumultuous, and ultimately triumphant, post-boxing life and career with untold stories. Yesterday (Sept. 7) was also the opening of the valley’s newest dining hot spot — the eagerly-awaited Hamptons at Tivoli Village — with Arizona celebrity chef Jay Bogsinske from Saint Marc in Huntington Beach. He’s serving up a twist on modern American cuisine in a two-level industrial-chic space of sophisticated ambiance.

Now, to the weekend:

• The Pacific Islands Festival will celebrate our 51st state at Henderson’s Water Street District.

• The plaza outside our T-Mobile Arena will transform into a basketball court for the Hoopfest 3 tournament.

• Chefs at Mario Batali’s Carnevino steakhouse in the Palazzo will do battle to determine whether the foods of Spain can outshine the delights of Italy.

• At Caesars Palace, world-famous chef Nobu Matsuhisa will host (and cook) at a wine dinner in his restaurant there.

• The Girl Scouts of Southern Nevadas will present their Dessert Before Dinner Gala at Caesars Palace with entertainment by Cirque du Soleil performers. Eight of our Strip and off-Strip star chefs — all ladies who were once Girl Scouts — will compete in a judged challenge to make the best dessert from S’mores. Eight other Vegas VIPs who were also Girl Scouts will be saluted with awards for their community service to Las Vegas. Has Halloween come early this year? I’ll help auction a dinner with eight nuns and a second item with our city’s firefighter hunks for a firehouse meal!

So let’s get ready to slide down the pole and answer the call to pray for another extraordinary weekend in the Entertainment Capital of the World:

Check out our Chris “Bachelor” Harrison interview in Sunday’s ENT section of the Review-Journal as he hosts that night’s live Miss America pageant from Atlantic City on ABC TV as our Miss Nevada, Andrea Martinez, competes against 51 other contestants. All next week, I will be working from Los Angeles as I have to undergo two medical procedures — hopefully minor. Old age does creep up on one but we’ll be here each day with the latest news and a special advance sneak preview look at the “Fantasy,” calendar saluting the dazzling dancers of the Luxor show as it begins its 18th year of nonstop performances.
