‘BAZ – STAR CROSSED LOVE’ toasts grand opening at Palazzo tonight

BAZ — STAR CROSSED LOVE, a high-energy musical celebrating the films of Aussie director Baz Luhrmann, celebrates its grand opening at Palazzo Theater tonight. The new generation cabaret is a frenetic, movie-music mashup of some of the world’s most iconic love stories as imagined by visionary Luhrmann.
Inspired by Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” (with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes), “Moulin Rouge” (with Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman), “The Great Gatsby” (with DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire) and the Australian “Strictly Ballroom,” theatrical concert BAZ boasts soul-stirring and stunning performances from an ensemble cast and band, according to a news release.
FOR THE RECORD: BAZ, which had an all-too-short run last year at Light in Mandalay Bay, was fabulous, and here’s hoping that the reimagined production and theater, with new cast and crew, is equal its Strip predecessor.
“The arrival of BAZ is the continuation of our commitment to develop new and distinct experiences for our guests,” said George Markantonis, president and COO of The Venetian, The Palazzo and Sands Expo, in the release. “As the entertainment landscape in Las Vegas continues to evolve, productions like BAZ appeal to audiences who are looking for something unique. This is not a show staged within the confines of traditional theater.”
The show, five years in the making, is the creation of For The Record, a genre-bending theatrical company in Los Angeles with a vision of turning soundtracks of filmmakers into an immersive theatrical-concert experience. The show, which has been staged in limited engagements to critical success, has been reformulated for its debut at The Palazzo.
This includes a venue designed around For The Record’s unique format, a reimagined storyline to tie together the show’s production numbers and a new setlist that includes a song from Luhrmann’s upcoming Netflix original series “The Get Down” premiering in August.
BAZ — STAR CROSSED LOVE will run Tuesdays through Sundays at 7:30 p.m. in the Palazzo Theater. Tickets start at $59.50 and can be purchased at any box office at The Venetian or The Palazzo, at Palazzo.com and by calling (702) 414-9000 and (866) 641-7469.
