Reader seeks serene dining experience

Sometimes it seems that restaurants keep getting more open and, consequently, noisier. No wonder Barbara Davis is looking for those with cozy, intimate spaces.

Grapevine Canyon great spot for history, recreation

An impressive display of ancient American Indian rock art decorates granite boulders at the mouth of Grapevine Canyon, a desert oasis near Laughlin. Located along the scenic Christmas Tree Pass Road, Grapevine Canyon provides opportunities for hiking, exploring and tailgate picnicking, and is best enjoyed during the cooler months of the year.

Energetic Tomlin’s act more than mere nostalgia

Lily Tomlin slips in and out of her comedic characters at the turn of a phrase. But it didn’t seem to be part of the act when, no sooner had she climbed into her oversized Edith Ann chair, she climbed back out again and headed for some bottled water.

Rogers Spring a scenic natural oasis

A delightful cool-season destination, Rogers Spring in Lake Mead National Recreation Area provides opportunities for picnicking, hiking and exploration. The natural oasis features a shallow pool fed by a warm spring shaded by palms, tamarisk and other vegetation. The overflow creates a meandering creek that heads toward Lake Mead. A few hundred yards distant, tiny Blue Point Spring supports more trees and marshy undergrowth.

Smaller fish finding more wiggle room on Strip

Show producers get it, but they don’t have to like it. The Strip seems full if you crowd around the new Mirage volcano show. But the ticketed shows seem half empty … if they’re lucky.

Frustrating ‘Mad Men’ season full of ups and downs

Having to question the generally unimpeachable genius of creator Matthew Weiner is enough to make any lover of quality television wince. But here goes: What in the name of Betty Draper’s fainting couch is going on with “Mad Men”?
