Try these suggestions for Beef Wellington
February 22, 2012 - 2:00 am
Beef Wellington is one of those classic dishes that is almost symbolic of old Las Vegas, and it’s pretty difficult to find these days. But in response to a query from Janet and Keith Oberlander, Kathy Boland heartily recommended the individual Wellingtons at the Carmel Room at the Rampart, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. Mike Smith also reported seeing them in the freezer case at Costco, though Earnie Tomey added that they’re seasonal. …
For Sandy Morgan and other readers looking for the equally scarce Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers — an essential ingredient for numerous dessert recipes — Kathleen Persing and Colleen Sams reported finding them at Albertsons. …
For Larry and Carol Knopp, Lynne A. Graham emailed that Oklahoma Joe’s Hog Rub & Yard Bird Seasoning is available at www.Charbroil.com (866-239-6777.) …
For Carol Barker, Aaron Mantz emailed that Alpha Bits cereal usually can be found at 99 Cents Only stores. …
For Dwight Harouff, who’s looking for cornbread that isn’t cakelike and doesn’t crumble when buttered, Susan Eagle recommended Martha White Cornbread, which she gets at Smith’s. …
For Nancy Johnson, who’s looking for California oranges, Jennie Cicala emailed that she’s been buying them all season at Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market. …
And it’s a little late for this year — since Mardi Gras was Tuesday — but we did get some tips on local sources for king cakes. Joni Akselraf recommended Bread and Butter at 10940 S. Eastern Ave. in Henderson, which she said carries other New Orleans treats; she suggested calling ahead at 675-3300 to order. And LaMonte Woods recommended Dainty Cakes at 2708 N. Green Valley Parkway in Henderson.

And Sandra Leftakes: Sara Lee Banana Cake, Sara Lee Butter Streusel Coffee Cake, Switzer’s Licorice, Diet Pepsi Lime, Diet Pepsi Caffeine-Free in 16-ounce bottles, Birdseye Southwestern frozen corn and “any decent vanilla ice cream” because she misses Blue Bell from Texas.
