Taste of the Town: Readers dig out locations to buy seedless rye bread

Judy Stevens is looking for seedless rye bread, and her fellow readers know where to find it.

“The best rye bread in town is made and sold at the Bagel Cafe” at 301 N. Buffalo Drive, emailed Andrea Drasner. “They have seedless and seeded rye — just like the kind we used to get in New York bakeries!”

The Bagel Cafe also was recommended by Sue Gerson and Evelyn Austin. Gerson also recommended the German Bread Bakery at 2237 N. Rampart Blvd. and 9255 S. Eastern Ave., as did Claude Black and Ingrid Fugate, and Jan Visser emailed that seedless rye can be found at Vons. …

And for Morrie Cutler, who’s looking for gluten-free rye bread, Beth Stefano emailed that it would have to be rye-flavored bread, since rye contains gluten. That said, she noted she had purchased Three Bakers gluten-free rye bread at Albertsons at 10140 W. Flamingo Road. She also reported spotting on Amazon.com two- and four-packs of gluten-free rye bread by Canyon Bakehouse, a Colorado-based bakery whose products she has purchased at Target at 8750 W. Charleston Blvd. And she said Amazon also carries Three Bakers. …

For Jimmy Wike, who’s looking for a local source for avocado oil, Pearl Prunetta said it’s available at Costco and Trader Joe’s, both of which have multiple stores in the valley. …

For Russ Russell, who’s looking for Cincinnati chili/spaghetti, Mary Anne Taglia emailed: “You can get real Cincy chili at The Egg Works. It is even available in an omelet.” The Egg Works has five locations around the valley; the Egg &I is a sister restaurant that also serves Cincy chili, three, four or five ways. …

For Dan Atfield, who’s looking for bottled apple cider, David Fleury emailed, “the best apple cider on the West Coast is made locally at Gilcrease Orchard,” which is at 7800 N. Tenaya Way. The orchard’s current hours are 7 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. …

And for Carolyn Stephens, Ann Brown faxed to say she can find oyster stew at Big Al’s Oyster Bar at The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave., adding, “they will make it fresh for her husband.”
