Taste of the Town: Don’t tell us we can’t buy that salad dressing

A great way to discover a new product is to try it in a restaurant, but sometimes it’s only available on the wholesale level. When Donna DeFrank discovered Marzetti Simply Dressed Pomegranate Vinaigrette Dressing when it was served with a salad she got at Wendy’s, she asked where she could buy it and was told she couldn’t.

“Well, you can,” DeFrank emailed in response to a request from fellow Taste of the Town reader Esther Lynn. “I found it at Smith’s in the produce refrigerated section, where they have the salad in the bags.” Nancy Clark also reported finding the dressing at Smith’s, and Ann Brown found it at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road. …

Chris and Penny Bonanno said they found a source for sockeye salmon after they emailed me but before it was published, but I used their request anyway, to see if readers would spot more sources.

And of course they did: Brown faxed that she found it at Glazier’s, but she advised calling first to check because it’s not always available. Evelyn Austin reported finding it at Whole Foods Market at 8855 W. Charleston Blvd; there are three other Whole Foods stores in the valley. And Leslie Hall emailed that it’s available frozen at Sprouts Farmers Market, which now has three stores in the valley, including the new one in Henderson. …

For Jimmy Wike, who’s looking for a local source for avocado oil, Abby Moline reported finding it at Costco at 801 S. Pavilion Center Drive (there are several Costco stores in the valley), and Pattie Arnold found it at the International Marketplace at 5000 S. Decatur Blvd. …

And here’s a money-saving tip from reader Joan Gobie, now that the price of limes is through the roof: She swears that the liquid from a jar of dill pickles is a good substitute for lime juice in guacamole. “If you’re out of limes (or even lemon juice), try it … a little in recipes calling for limes is a natural,” she said. “Sliced limes are still unbeatable, of course.”
