Make or buy wasabi mayonnaise
March 25, 2009 - 9:00 pm
For Joan Basil, who’s looking for wasabi mayonnaise, readers were nearly unanimous in their responses: Trader Joe’s, which has numerous locations in the valley and was recommended by Roberta Shulman, June Shook, Jennie Cicala, Natalie Tantleff, Diane Williams and Jayne Boone.
Sheila Morse e-mailed that it’s also available at Vons at 2511 Anthem Village Drive in Henderson, adding, “however, it can easily be made by mixing prepared wasabi from a tube into preferred mayonnaise. You also have better control of the strength.” …
For Bruce Merrin, who’s looking for local sources for smoked white fish, Shulman and Pearl Prunetta both e-mailed that it’s available at the Bagel Cafe, 301 N. Buffalo Drive. …
For the Mallomars Merrin also is looking for, David Zakem said he has found them — “possibly the best boxed cookie on earth” — at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 8060 W. Tropical Parkway. Barry Niedelman said he has found them at the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 6464 N. Decatur Blvd., but both he and Prunetta said they’re not available during the warmer months of the year. …
For Mary Swift, who’s looking for a restaurant that serves cold sesame noodles, Shulman said she found them at New York Chinese Restaurant, 9430 W. Lake Mead Blvd. …
For the spaghetti with chicken livers that Merrin also is looking for, Janine Williams, Barbara Silver, Tom Jenkins and Marge Phegley recommended Carluccio’s Tivoli Gardens, 1775 E. Tropicana Ave. …
And for the Ukrainian Easter eggs Gordon Blugis is seeking, Janice Manning of St. Gabriel the Archangel Byzantine Catholic Church, 2250 E. Maule Ave., sells them in its gift shop, which is open after liturgies at about 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. on Sundays (or appointments can be set up through the parish office, 361-2431). Jane Lemasters suggested Blugis contact the Las Vegas Senior Center to see if any of the students in the center’s egg-decorating class would like to sell their work, and Cheryl Washburn suggested he check eBay under psyanky, psyanki and psianki (various spellings for the art) or check the Web site of the Polish Art Center (which also carries supplies for making them) at www.polartcenter.com. …
More on three-bean salad: Zakem said one made by Read is available at the Wal-Mart Supercenter on Tropical Parkway. …
Reader requests: Richard Conrad is looking for S&W Chili Makin’s. …
Sharon Kalvert is looking for artichoke-flour breadsticks, plain or sesame. …
Pat Hollingsworth is looking for Bella Sun Carne Asada Marinade in Minutes, which used to be available at Albertsons. …
Josephine Lemberg is looking for schmaltz herring, and wonders if any stores other than Albertsons carry Vita herring. …
And Barbara Metzger, Phyllis Friedman, Bobbie Eichberger and a legion of other readers are looking for a local source for Canfield’s Diet Chocolate Soda — partly because, Friedman said, “half-soda and half-skim milk is a poor man’s egg cream.”
