Game day may lead you to taste of home

Here’s a tip for any of you who don’t make a point of catching my colleague John Przybys’ listing of National Football League bars every fall: Perhaps you should.

Maybe you don’t like football, and don’t follow a team. Or maybe you just don’t want to watch the game in a bar. But here’s something of interest to foodies: Many of the bars that follow NFL teams each fall and host game-day events every week (well, almost every week), serve regional food specialties. So, if you’re looking for a taste of back home, you might find it during football season.

Case in point: Chuck Hunter is looking for restaurants that serve scrapple for breakfast. And Tony Radovich emailed to point out that it’s served on every Philadelphia Eagles game day at the Madison Avenue Bar & Grill, 855 E. Twain Ave.

For Beth Stehlik, who’s looking for a local source for Czech or Polish food, Leona Iglinski, Dave Levesque and Connie Applegate recommended the Polish Deli at 5900 W. Charleston Blvd., with Applegate adding, "If she doesn’t have it, she will get what you want." Levesque also recommended the International Marketplace at 5000 S. Decatur Blvd. …

For Dee West, who’s looking for 100 percent tangerine juice, Maxine Marcus recommended Whole Foods Market, and Levesque reported finding it at Trader Joe’s and at Sunflower Farmer’s Market, which is at 3365 E. Tropicana Ave. and 4020 S. Rainbow Blvd. …
