DINING: Oscar’s to be the place for steaks — and martinis

There’s been plenty of speculation about what former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman would be doing in his retirement. Running for higher office? Resuming his law practice? The answer: opening a steakhouse.

The Plaza announced today that Oscar’s would open this fall, part of a newly invigorated restaurant lineup that also will include Hash House A Go Go, Island Sushi and Hawaiian Grill (from longtime local chef Terence Fong) and Zaba’s Mexican Grill.

Oscar’s, which will serve dinner nightly and Sunday brunch, will be in the Plaza’s iconic dome. An artist’s rendering shows the name emblazoned amid plenty of glitz — and a martini glass, natch, to represent the mayor’s favorite adult beverage. Old-timers will remember that once upon a time, the dome was a martini-shaped pool, so the site is particularly fitting.

This will be the second former-mayoral steakhouse in Las Vegas. Ron’s Steakhouse at Arizona Charlie’s is named for former Mayor Ron Lurie, who’s also the property’s general manager.
