Calling out for Monte Cristos

After a column a few months ago that mentioned the long-departed Foxy’s, a Las Vegas institution of the ’50s and ’60s, Sandi Rich emailed that Foxy’s also made “the best Monte Cristo sandwich,” and wondered whether anybody is making one like that anymore.

Las Vegas is such a city of transplants that I doubt many readers remember Foxy’s Monte Cristo, but that particular sandwich, cloaked by French toast, has been such a frequent request over the years – including, most recently, from Paulina Roth – and the answers such a continually moving target, that I decided to lead the column with it this week.

So I ask, readers: Where in Las Vegas today do you find good Monte Cristos? …

And here are some reader finds:

For Kathleen McCarthy, who’s looking for honey butter in tubs, Kathy Dondero emailed that it’s available at the Walmart Supercenter at 5200 S. Fort Apache Road (she added that cinnamon butter also is available). And for readers looking for Chateau frozen bread dumplings, she reported finding them at AJ’s Fine Foods in Phoenix, should you be in the area. …

For Jim and Cam Camburn, Theresia Forgey said brioche hamburger buns are available at Sanborn Bakery, 5230 S. Valley View Blvd., and suggested ordering a day ahead. …

For Ella Catucci, who’s looking for fresh beef tongue, Michelle Knoll reported finding it at Sam’s Club at 1910 E. Serene Ave. …

And for Alex Borbely, who’s looking for a market that sells fresh beef brisket, Knoll said she spotted it at Whole Foods Market. …

More on Musselman’s apple butter: Carl Danweber reported finding it at Food 4 Less at 120 S. Rainbow Blvd. …

Here are more reader requests.

Dee Hopkins: cream-cheese syrup for use with red velvet pancakes;

Malcolm Sallie: Welch’s yogurt-covered strawberries;

Kathleen Faccini: Cento diced hot cherry peppers from Cento Fine Foods in Thorofare, N.J. …

Devin Austin: Nalley’s Baby Banquet Dill Pickles;

Joan Bernstein: a local source, in addition to Bagel Cafe, for whitefish salad and stuffed derma;

Steve Andersen: Wheatsworth Crackers, which he used to get at Vons;

Janet Adelman: a plain (not oatmeal) raisin cookie, flat with lots of raisins;

And Terry Jamieson: Chef-mate Country Sausage Gravy, found at Sam’s Club in Missouri, plus Pillsbury ready-made biscuits in a 24-pack and American Heritage Worcestershire Sauce in the 1-gallon size.
