SANDOVAL, CAST PARTY
RETURN TO CABARET JAZZ
It’s “play it again” time at The Smith Center’s Cabaret Jazz as trumpeter Arturo Sandoval and Jim Caruso’s Cast Party return to the intimate club this week.
At 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday, trumpeter Sandoval — a 10-time Grammy Award-winner who kicked off The Smith Center’s 2012 grand opening gala — performs with his band. In addition to original compositions, Sandoval will salute another great trumpeter: jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie.
And at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Caruso’s Cast Party returns to Cabaret Jazz for the fourth time. Pianist Billy Stritch and host Caruso lead the impromptu evening of musical merriment, which in past visits has featured turns from such Vegas mainstays as Clint Holmes, Donny Osmond, Susan Anton and Frankie Moreno.

‘MRS. MANNERLY’
RETAKES THE STAGE
Fresh from its run at this summer’s VegasFringe festival, the comedy “Mrs. Mannerly” returns to Las Vegas Little Theatre Friday for a three-weekend run.
Inspired by memories of a childhood etiquette class, playwright Jeffrey Hatcher conjures the world of a 10-year-old studying manners in late 1960s Steubenville, Ohio, where a young student (Michael Blair) is determined to become the first pupil in 36 years to achieve a perfect score from his demanding teacher (Gillen Brey). Walter Niejadlik directs.
“Mrs. Mannerly” will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Las Vegas Little Theatre, 3920 Schiff Drive; additional performances are 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, through Sept. 28. ‘MAGIC FLUTE’
HITS FREMONT
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” gets a Las Vegas makeover, starting Thursday, as Sin City Opera stages a free modern-day version, “The Magic Flute on Fremont,” in Downtown Container Park.
This family-friendly version of the operatic classic, to be sung in English, features a vintage Vegas twist, with characters and a story inspired by Las Vegas history. Sin City Opera artistic director Skip Galla will stage the opera; Jack Gaughan serves as musical director. The production — set in an enchanted realm where good and evil collide — also features stage wizardry by Bill Smith and Magic Ventures, ballet dancers under the direction of Mary Aluas and local vocalists delivering Mozart’s exquisite melodies.

HENDERSON HOSTS
ISLAND FESTIVAL
Saddle up, paniolos. It’s time to celebrate Hawaii’s cowboys at this weekend’s 24th Annual Prince Jonah Kuhio Ho’olaule’a Pacific Islands Festival in Henderson.
This year’s event includes a special salute to Hawaiian cowboys — who have been wrangling cattle for more than 100 years — with pony rides, a paniolo outfit and lei contest, ukulele music and a special performance by award-winning Hawaiian and country singer Melveen Leed.
In addition to the cowboy tribute, the festival also serves up traditional island food and entertainment and more.

UNLV LAUNCHES
CHAMBER SERIES
Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann — or, more precisely, their music — kick off UNLV’s 2014-15 Chamber Music Series season during a Wednesday night concert.
Violinist Oleh Krysa, professor at the Eastman School of Music, will perform alongside UNLV faculty members including Mykola Suk (piano), Bill Bernatis (horn), Andrew Smith (cello) and Jason Bonham (viola).
