  • Ward 3 Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Coffin and the Las Vegas Arts Commission plan to host a free celebration from 4 to 6 pm. Nov. 6 to dedicate the first four public art projects on the First Street Art Trail. The celebration is set to begin in Boulder Plaza between Main and First streets at Boulder Avenue. The first four projects are: “Cycled Musings,” text art by artist Mary Hill featured on eight pairs of Dero bike racks from Boulder to Bridger Avenue and on two bike racks at City Hall; “Vegas Jackpot Art Cache,” an art cache and letterboxing project on First Street from Boulder to Clark Avenue (City Hall); “Snowball in Vegas,” a 9-foot sculpture of a cat at the corner of Coolidge Avenue and First Street by Las Vegas artist Jesse Smigel; and “Strata” in the “Windows on First,” an exhibit by UNLV art students Audrey Barcio and Rebecca Pugh depicting the interpretation of the effect of time and light on the Mojave Desert landscape. The exhibit references geological formations through color, line and layers made of hand-cut paper and acrylic paint and is displayed in three east-facing First Street windows of City Hall.

  • “Las Vegas Stories: Paradise Palms – Key Turning Points in Las Vegas History” is scheduled at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. Writer, editor and director of content development for the Mob Museum Geoff Schumacher is set to discuss specific dates in Las Vegas history from 1844 to 2014 and explain their significance to Las Vegas.   • Jason Robert Brown’s musical “The Last 5 Years” tells the story of two New Yorkers who dive head first into a marriage. The action follows a unique progression with the wife starting at end of the marriage going backward and the husband telling it from the beginning. The event, which was on hiatus last year, is set to feature an open house, military plane tours and flying demonstrations.   • Registration is open for the seventh annual Scale the Strat fundraising stair climb scheduled for March 1. Scale the Strat is scheduled concurrently with the third annual USA Stair Climb Championship, which is expected to attract elite stair climbers from all over the world and allow amateur climbers the opportunity to rub elbows with the best athletes in the sport as they climb the stairs in the Stratosphere Tower. An early bird discount rate of $40 is available before Dec. 31. Climbers are also asked to make a minimum $150 fundraising pledge for the American Lung Association.
