Classic cars, music and more in store for Henderson’s Super Run

The smell of gasoline, exhaust and rubber is set to return to downtown Henderson as an armada of classic cars fills the Water Street District.

The Las Vegas Cruisin’ Association and city of Henderson are set to kick off the 15th annual Super Run Classic Car Show at noon Sept. 25 at the Fiesta Henderson, 777 W. Lake Mead Parkway.

The event is slated to continue from noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 26, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 27 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 around the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water St.

More than 1,000 classic, vintage and muscle cars are set to make an appearance, according to city spokeswoman Nicole Johnson.

“It’s considered one of the biggest car shows in Southern Nevada,” Johnson said. “It’s 1,000 cars and more than 100,000 people in just four days.”

More than 150 trophies and $15,000 in cash prizes are set to be awarded to car participants throughout the event. Events include roaring engine, slow drag and burnout competitions from 2 to 6 p.m. Sept. 26 and 27.

“With the burnouts, the cars line up and spin their tires and create smoke. It’s a huge hit with the crowd,” Johnson said. “The slow drag is a totally different aspect. They see how slow they can go for about 20 feet without using their brakes.”

Las Vegas resident Lee Butler said he hopes to show his ’65 Chevrolet Suburban at this year’s event.

“I’ve been into cars a long time, mostly trucks, and I have my dad to thank for that,” Butler said. “I was always up under the hood and under cars with him when I was younger. Working on cars has always been an interest of mine.”

Butler, 53, said he restored a ’65 pickup before selling it to start on his Suburban.

“I’ve been working on the Suburban for about 14 years,” he said. “I did frame restoration and added a lot of custom touches and interior work. It’s a lot of fun, and it keeps me busy and out of trouble.”

Keeping in with the oldies theme, rock ‘n’ roll band Sha Na Na is set to perform at 8 p.m. Sept. 26. The band performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and appeared in the movie “Grease.”

Country band Chasin’ Crazy is scheduled to play at 8 p.m. Sept. 27.

“We noticed there was a huge following of country music, so we switched our outlook on the event about five or six years ago,” Johnson said. “It’s been a huge success since.”

The city also plans to display an art gallery featuring decorated hubcaps. Johnson said local artists purchased the hubcaps for $5 each and decorated and donated them for a silent auction, which is set to benefit the City Lights Youth Scholarship Fund.

“This is the third year we’ve done the hubcap gallery,” Johnson said. “It’s been a huge success so far.”

Water Street is set to be closed during the event. Free parking is available at the Henderson City Hall parking garage, 240 S. Water St., and the Henderson Justice Court parking garage, 243 S. Water St.

Spectator admission is free. For more information, hendersonlive.com/special-events.
