‘Butterfly’ taking flight at UNLV

Leave the butterfly nets at home — not proper opera etiquette, after all.

Just bring an appreciation for an operatic standard when “Madame Butterfly” flutters into the University of Nevada, Las Vegas this weekend, performed by the UNLV Opera Theatre and backed by the UNLV Symphony Orchestra.

Featuring Martha Banks in the titular role and directed by Courtney Crouse, Puccini’s three-act classic about an American naval officer and his geisha wife is the undisputed opera champ in the United States, ranked by Opera America — the national service organization supporting musical arts – as the most performed in North America.

Bringing Nagasaki to Las Vegas, “Madame Butterfly” alights at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at UNLV’s Judy Bayley Theatre.

Tickets are $25 for general admission; $15 for seniors, military personnel, UNLV faculty and staff; and $5 for UNLV students with IDs. Call 895-2787.
