5 favorite Nirvana covers
Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death.
Don’t be bummed, instead, celebrate the man’s music with those who have done the same.
So many bands have covered Nirvana tunes over the years, there’s literally hundreds to choose from.
Here are five of my favorites:
Dillinger Escape Plan, “Territorial Pissings”: The most savage tune on “Nevermind” becomes even more so at the clawed hands of these math metal giants.
Kristin Hersch, “Pennyroyal Tea”: I could listen to Hersch recite the ingredients to a tube of AquaFresh. To hear her fraught, frayed voice to one of Nirvana’s best tunes is as memorable as the song in question.
The Gaslight Anthem, “Sliver”: Such a sweet song about being a kid, bashed out with childlike abandon by this Jersey roots punk crew.
Richard Cheese, “Rape Me”: Cheese’s finger snappin’ lounge version of “Rape Me” makes it hard not to smile at a song that was meant to elicit no smiles.
Machine Head, “Negative Creep”: These Bay Area metallers add muscle and still more rancor to this “Bleach” stand out, amplifying the catharsis — and pretty much everything else.
