School lockdowns lifted as Las Vegas police investigate shooting

Lockdowns have been lifted at two Las Vegas schools near the scene of a shooting in the central valley.

Las Vegas police initially said they had responded to a report of “an illegal shooting of a firearm” in the 6500 block of Bannock Way.

Police later explained that they were checking a car’s vehicle identification number around 8:30 a.m. Thursday when they heard gunshots at a nearby residence.

They evacuated the nearby area. No injuries were reported.

Two people believed to be connected to the shooting have been detained. It is unclear whether the shooting was related to to the police presence in the area.

Bonanza High School and Warren Elementary School were on lockdown after the shooting, Clark County School District spokesman Mauricio Marin said.

While students were not able to leave school premises, both locations were continuing classes as normal, Marin said. The lockdowns was lifted by 11 a.m.
