Police end weekly releases of Las Vegas shooting records
The Metropolitan Police Department has no plans to release additional body camera footage or documents related to the Las Vegas shooting, the agency announced Thursday.
Since May, Metro has released 34 batches of records in connection with the Oct. 1, 2017, shooting at the Route 91 Harvest musical festival, where a gunman killed 58 concertgoers and injured hundreds more from a room on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay.
“We don’t expect any further major releases of either video or documents related to 1 October; however, we are now doing due diligence to ensure that all documents have been released,” Metro said in a statement Thursday. “If documents are identified that have not previously been released, they will be made available. At this time there are no more scheduled weekly releases.”
The weekly dispatches came after the Las Vegas Review-Journal and other media organizations sued the department for access to the records. The most recent batch of records, released to media on Dec. 27, included 83 video files and 18 documents.
In total, hundreds of videos, 911 calls and documents have been released under court order. Review-Journal reporters continue to review the records.
Maggie McLetchie, the attorney handling the case for the newspaper, said Metro’s announcement does not necessarily end the litigation.
“I don’t think they’re in compliance with the order at this point,” she said Thursday. “We have concerns about redactions and other issues. We think there’s a lot of issues with how the production of records were handled.”
McLetchie said she received Metro’s statement from the Review-Journal on Thursday and has not heard from the department’s legal counsel. She expects the case to go back before a Clark County district judge.
In August, Metro released its final report on the mass shooting. Police were not able to determine the gunman’s motive.
A final report is still expected from the FBI, although it is unclear when that may become public.
