An off-duty Las Vegas police officer and his wife shot and killed a man who attacked their neighbor in Boulder City on Friday, according to police.
During a news briefing on Friday, Capt. Kurt McKenzie of the Metropolitan Police Department shared additional details about the shooting, which took place in the 700 block of 6th Street just after 9:40 a.m.
McKenzie said the Metro officer was inside his home with his wife when they heard a “commotion” coming from their neighbor’s backyard. When he went outside, he found a male “mounted on top of a female punching and strangling her at the same time.”
When the officer then intervened, he separated the two, handing the woman off to his wife who was in his front yard. Still, the man followed him, McKenzie said.
“The officer gave numerous commands to the male to stop: ‘Do not come any closer, or we will shoot,’” McKenzie said. “At this time, the male continued to advance on them, causing the off-duty officer and his wife to shoot the subject, striking him.”
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
McKenzie said that Metro would be investigating the event as an officer-involved shooting, given that the officer is employed with the department.
“The incident does not involve any of our Boulder City police officers, and there is no danger to the public,” the Boulder City Police Department said on its Facebook page.
