Las Vegas police ID officer involved in shooting after chase
The officer involved in a shooting Thursday after a man led police on a high-speed chase through the west valley has been named by the Metropolitan Police Department.
Officer Weston Williams has been with the Police Department since November 2006. The 42-year-old officer is assigned to the Community Policing Division in the department’s Bolden area command, Metro said.
Police said at about the same time Thursday when the suspect shot himself in the head behind a strip mall near U.S. Highway 95 and Jones Boulevard, Williams also fired one round, striking the suspect in his shoulder.
The incident began 10:30 a.m. in Henderson when the man’s wife called 911 to report that her husband was suicidal and armed with a handgun and possibly a rifle, Metro Capt. Kelly McMahill said Thursday. Metro officers took over once Henderson police tracked the man’s phone and learned he was in Metro’s jurisdiction.
The Clark County coroner’s office will identify the man who died once his family has been notified.
Williams has been placed on paid administrative leave pending a review of the incident, police said.
This is the 18th officer-involved shooting investigated by Metro this year.
