2 suspects in fatal Seattle shooting arrested in Las Vegas

Two men suspected in a shooting last week in Seattle that killed one person and injured seven were arrested Saturday in Las Vegas near the Rio, officials said.

The Seattle Police Department identified 24-year-old Marquise Latrell Tolbert and 24-year-old William Ray Tolliver as two of three suspects wanted in connection with the shooting. The third suspect, 21-year-old Jamel Jackson, was arrested the night of the shooting.

Las Vegas police took Tolbert and Tolliver into custody about 10:50 a.m., according to Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Ken Nogle. Dispatch records indicate that police were called about 8:50 a.m. to the Rio, at 3700 W. Flamingo Road, after a report of a wanted suspect.

Nogle said the men were arrested near the Rio, not inside the casino. The men “complied when confronted by detectives” and were taken into custody without incident, he said.

Addressing reporters in Seattle on Saturday evening, Seattle Police Department Chief Carmen Best said officials were working to extradite the two men to Washington.

“A lot of hours were spent locating these suspects and finding them and taking them into custody in Las Vegas,” she said during a press conference, later adding, “Personally I’m very glad they’re in custody and I’m certainly very relieved that these two people who were involved in a mass shooting and a murder are in custody.”

Best did not elaborate on how the two were arrested or why the men were in Southern Nevada.

The shooting stemmed from a dispute in front of a McDonald’s restaurant in downtown Seattle, the city’s police chief said in previous newspaper reports.

About 5 p.m. Jan. 22, police began receiving calls about multiple gunshot victims, Seattle Fire Chief Harold Scoggins said at the time. One woman died, and seven others were treated for gunshot wounds.

As of Jan. 23, a 55-year-old woman went from critical to serious condition, and a 32-year-old man and a 9-year-old boy were in satisfactory condition. The Seattle Times reported that on the day after the shooting, four men, ages 21, 34, 35 and 49, had been treated and released.

The King County medical examiner’s office identified the woman killed as 50-year-old Tanya Jackson.

Video showed several people firing weapons after the argument.

“This is not a random incident, there were multiple people involved,” Best said on Jan. 23.

“There was a dispute that happened in front of the McDonald’s, people pulled out guns, shots rang out, people ran in various directions.”

Seattle police including homicide and gang units were investigating.

Best said on Jan. 23 that Jackson, who was wounded in the shooting, is also a suspected shooter and was arrested at a hospital.

Jackson has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. He was not the aggressor but is suspected of firing a gun multiple times in a crowded intersection, authorities said.

Records show that Tolbert and Tolliver have lengthy arrest records, and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan has said the two are believed to have gang connections.

Tolbert was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on Saturday and is being held without bail on a fugitive warrant, jail records show. Tolliver had not appeared in jail or court records as of Saturday afternoon.
