2 people shot at south Las Vegas apartment complex

Updated January 27, 2018 - 5:07 pm

A woman and her 15-year-old daughter are expected to live after they were both shot in the head multiple times Saturday morning in the south valley, Las Vegas police said.

Hours after the shooting, the woman’s husband turned himself in at the Clark County Detention Center in connection with the incident, the Metropolitan Police Department said.

At 11:05 a.m., the woman had managed to call 911 to report that she and her daughter had been shot in the head by her husband inside their apartment on the 2300 block of Silverado Ranch Boulevard.

The two were taken to University Medical Center’s trauma unit, where the woman, who is in her early 40s, was initially admitted in critical condition. As of 1:30 p.m., their doctors told police the mother and daughter were expected to survive.

The man, who police said is in his 60s, fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

“We had a lot of people scrambling on this to find him,” homicide Lt. Dan McGrath said Saturday at the scene. “This was a very high level of violence.”

At about 1:20 p.m., just minutes after detectives received word the suspect had turned himself in, officers began taking down the yellow crime scene tape surrounding the apartment unit — the same one Metro patrol officers were called to a day earlier for a family disturbance.

Police dispatch logs show that call came in about 2:40 p.m. Friday, when “some threats” had been made, police said. Neither McGrath nor Metro Lt. Isaac Auten could provide details regarding Friday’s call for service, and it wasn’t immediately clear whether the family had other previous domestic violence issues.

The man, who McGrath confirmed has a criminal history, is expected to face two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. Auten added the suspect could potentially face additional gun charges if the man is a convicted felon.

“If there’s ever any kind of violence within your family unit, make sure you don’t hesitate to reach out, and we’ll assist any way we can,” Auten reminded the public.
