New charges for ex-Henderson teacher accused of inappropriate contact
A former Henderson middle school teacher previously accused of inappropriate contact with students faces new charges, police said.
Four additional students came forward and said former Brown Middle School teacher Jeffrey Schultz, 47, acted inappropriately with them while he was still teaching at the school, according to the Henderson Police Department. Officer Scott Williams said Schultz faces four counts of unlawful contact with a minor, a gross misdemeanor.
“It’s basically a continuation of the case back in March,” Williams said.
A warrant for his arrest was issued, and Williams said Schultz was arrested Wednesday. Court records indicate he posted bail.
Schultz was first arrested March 21 on charges of three misdemeanor counts of annoyance, molestation of, or indecency toward a minor younger than 18. He bailed out of Henderson Detention Center the same day, Williams said at the time.
A March arrest report noted Schultz already had been warned of his behavior on two previous occasions.
In February, Schultz asked three girls to stay after class, dismissing two male friends who were waiting to eat lunch, according to the arrest report. The girls reported Schultz asked them what kind of underwear they had under their leggings. The girls reported being confused and uncomfortable.
Schultz’s case was among those highlighted in Broken Trust, a Las Vegas Review-Journal three-part series examining the issue of sexual misconduct by employees in the Clark County School District. The series examined three major issues: the district’s contract with the teachers’ union, loopholes in background checks and insufficient employee training.
Over the past three years, 31 staff members have been arrested on suspicion of sexual misconduct or inappropriate behavior with a student. The district ended last year with 13 employee arrests. That’s higher than the number of such arrests for the 2016-17 school year in some of the nation’s largest districts, the series revealed. Schultz was hired by the district in March 2007. He resigned May 30, district spokeswoman Melinda Malone said.
