Officers involved in shooting that left police dog dead identified

Las Vegas police have released the names of the officers involved in the shooting that left a police dog dead on Thursday.

Sergeant Eric Kerns, Officers James Coovert, Abudhabi Lewis and Carlos Luna were involved in the shooting that occured at 9848 Fast Elk Street just before noon.

Brenden Hughes, 31, and Felicia Wimberly-Hughes, 46, were fatally shot inside the home by the suspect, Capt. Shawn Andersen said.

The officers confronted the man outside and told him to drop the handgun he was holding as they had attempted to arrest him using the police dog Nicky. The suspect shot the dog. Sgt. Kerns and Officers Coovert, Lewis and Luna shot the suspect who was rushed to University Medical Center for treatment, Andersen said.

The officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a review of the event.
