Nye County prison inmate dies, according to sheriff’s office

A Nye County inmate died Tuesday morning, the Nye County sheriff’s office said.

Around 6:20 a.m., sheriff’s deputies were counting heads in the Nye County Detention Center in Pahrump when they discovered a male inmate unresponsive on his cell’s floor, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

Pahrump Valley Fire and Rescue responded, but the inmate was pronounced dead. The statement didn’t say how long he’d been in prison or what crime he’d been convicted of.

The inmate was housed alone in the cell, the sheriff’s office said; he neither notified staff of any health issues nor sought help. Investigators don’t suspect foul play, the sheriff’s office said.

The body has been turned over to the Clark County Coroner’s office for autopsy investigation. He won’t be identified publicly until family has been notified.
