Police investigate fatal shooting in southwest Las Vegas

Updated February 25, 2020 - 3:16 pm

A man is dead following what police believe was a domestic-related shooting Tuesday morning in a southwest Las Vegas Valley apartment complex.

About 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, a woman called 911 to report that her son had been shot inside the apartment she shares with him and his younger brother, Metropolitan Police Department homicide Lt. Ray Spencer said outside the scene Tuesday afternoon.

When officers arrived they found a man in his late 40s suffering from a gunshot wound inside an apartment at the Broadstone Flamingo West complex, 9100 W. Flamingo Road.

The man was rushed to University Medical Center, where he died.

Spencer said that the shooting appeared to be domestic-related. When officers arrived, the man’s younger brother, who is in his early 40s, was also at the scene.

“We are still trying to determine what transpired inside the apartment. We’re getting some conflicting stories,” Spencer said Tuesday afternoon.

The brother had been detained and was being interviewed by police Tuesday afternoon, but no one had been arrested, Spencer said. The man’s mother was not being considered a potential suspect.

The woman reported there was an “altercation” inside the apartment, Spencer said.

“The issue is who was the altercation between,” he said.

He said that as of Tuesday afternoon, detectives did not believe any suspects were outstanding. Further information about the shooting was not immediately available.

Spencer said police earlier in the day believed there may have been an outstanding suspect. Anthony Walker, 30, who lives in the complex, said an officer told him and his mother that morning that the complex was safe.

“I was sitting in my living room, and I heard the helicopters and all that, and I looked outside and they were all swarming in here,” Walker said.

The man’s death marks the ninth homicide Metro has investigated this year, according to records maintained by the Review-Journal. The man will be identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.
