Man killed, teen wounded in shooting on Las Vegas street

Updated June 3, 2018 - 3:56 pm

For a short time early Sunday, quiet had been restored to a west valley neighborhood.

A house party on the 6100 block of Novelty Street had been shut down by Las Vegas police. But just after 1 a.m., the sound of gunshots pierced the air in the neighborhood near Fort Apache Road and Patrick Lane.

As people ran from the gunfire that erupted from a black sedan, a man and a 17-year-old boy were left on the corner of Spring Blush Avenue and Novelty with gunshot wounds, police said. They were taken to University Medical Center, where the man died.

The man and teen were with several other people on the corner and talking about going to another party, police said, when the black car drove by. The vehicle turned around and, as it passed the group a second time, a person inside the car opened fire, hitting the man and teen, before speeding off.

The motive remained unclear Sunday, and no arrests had been made.

Police said some of witnesses left before officers arrived.

The Metropolitan Police Department asks that anyone who may have been in the area during the shooting ontact its homicide section at 702-828-3521 or Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555. Anyone with surveillance video in the neighborhood may also contact Metro.

The man who was killed will be identified by the Clark County coroner once his family has been notified. According to records maintained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, his death was the 77th homicide investigated by Metro this year and the 56th gun-related killing.
