Man arrested in killing of pedestrian outside Pahrump casino

Updated May 26, 2022 - 11:40 am

A Nye County man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle and killed Thursday in a Pahrump casino parking lot.

The Nye County Sheriff’s Office said on its Facebook page that the pedestrian was run over in the parking lot of the Pahrump Nugget on state Route 160. Authorities soon identified Jeremy O’Brien, 42, of Pahrump as a suspect in the death.

A statement from the Sheriff’s Office said O’Brien “had intentionally struck a pedestrian with his car.”

Authorities said they searched for O’Brien but could not immediately find him. They also served a search warrant on O’Brien’s residence in Pahrump.

O’Brien was eventually arrested Saturday night by deputies at a Pahrump home and booked at the Nye County Detention Center.

On Wednesday, the Nye County district attorney’s office charged O’Brien with murder and leaving the scene of a fatal crash, according to a press release.

“As we’ve seen in too many other cases, a motor vehicle can be a deadly weapon, not just on the highways but even in a parking lot,” District Attorney Chris Arabia said. “Based on our review and what we know so far, malice appears to have been present and murder is the appropriate top charge. We will fight to get justice for the victim.”

Shanade Erwin has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and accessory to murder for allegedly helping O’Brien evade capture, according to the release.

O’Brien is due in Pahrump Justice Court on Thursday.

The release identified the pedestrian as “local man” John Mullins.
