Homeless man complained of noise before he was shot to death, report shows
A homeless man’s noise complaint ended with him being shot to death last week, police records show.
Officers responded about 9:30 p.m. Thursday to reports of a man who was shot multiple times near the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard North and Searles Avenue, between Washington and Owens avenues.
The Clark County coroner later identified the man as 39-year-old Gordon Phillips Jr., who was homeless.
Police arrested 30-year-old Michael Deangelo McNair, who worked at an area business, in connection with the killing on Friday.
Before the shooting, McNair was in the parking lot of the business listening to music when Phillips complained about the noise to him, an arrest report shows.
McNair then went inside the business and recruited another employee, Ramiro Romero, to help beat Phillips up, according to the report. Romero told police the two went to the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard North and Searles Avenue to attack the man, but stayed at the corner and yelled at him instead, according to the report.
When the two returned to the business, Romero went back inside and McNair met another person, who was driving a white SUV, outside.
McNair and the SUV’s driver, who was not identified, walked back to the area where Phillips was killed, and they were seen running back toward the business, according to the report. The SUV’s driver then left and was not seen again. It’s unclear from the report when the shots were fired.
Surveillance video from the business showed McNair taking a handgun out of his pocket and showing Romero when he walked back into the business.
McNair was arrested and is being held without bail in the Clark County Detention Center. He faces a first-degree murder charge.
