Arrest made in fatal stabbing last month in Las Vegas home
Shannon Shabar Newmon is accused of fatally stabbing a 19-year-old man who he claims hit his girlfriend in retaliation over an ongoing dispute between the two men, records show.
The 36-year-old suspect faces a murder charge in the June 30 killing of Kenyaan Mills. He remained jailed Tuesday at the Clark County Detention Center without bail after being arrested Sunday.
Mills was found face down in the kitchen of Newmon’s home on the 1600 block of Manhattan Drive, suffering from a single stab wound to his chest. A Metropolitan Police Department arrest report for Newmon indicates that Mills was stabbed with a pole.
Just before the argument and stabbing that morning, Mills was asleep in a bedroom inside Newmon’s house, which police said was shared with several roommates. At about 6:25 a.m., Newmon allegedly tried to force his way into his roommate’s bedroom, where Mills and a woman were asleep, police said in the arrest report.
The woman told police that the sound of Mills struggling to keep Newmon out woke her up. The argument eventually spilled out of the bedroom, ending with Mills and Newmon scuffling over a pole, the report said.
Another roommate, who also woke up after hearing the two men fighting, peeked out from his bedroom door and saw Mills “fade off into the other room where he collapsed,” the report said. Newmon then jumped out his bedroom window and left before officers arrived, the roommate told investigators.
Newmon’s roommates told detectives that the stabbing stemmed from a two-week dispute that had turned physical, the report detailed. The roommates also said Mills had hit Newmon’s girlfriend in retaliation.
He is expected in court Wednesday, jail records show.
Mills’ death was the 86th homicide and the ninth fatal stabbing investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department this year, according to records maintained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. As of Tuesday, Metro had investigated 89 homicides this year.
