Wynn attorneys to question gaming tycoon Kazuo Okada

Japanese gaming tycoon Kazuo Okada will be in Las Vegas Sept. 18 to face questioning by Wynn Resorts Ltd. attorneys.

The subject matter will be confined, by order of Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez, to Okada’s request for some of Wynn’s records. Wynn’s attorneys will be allowed to ask whether Okada has an “improper purpose” in trying to unearth information that could be used against the company.

In court papers, Wynn’s lawyers contend Okada wants the documents because of “his own personal venom for (CEO Steve) Wynn and his personal agenda in his lawsuit against Wynn Resorts.”

Okada has contended he is unfairly being squeezed out of the company, notably the forced redemption of his nearly 20 percent stake at a 30 percent discount. Some documents he seeks concern the company’s $135 million donation to the University of Macau last year as it was awaiting approval of a gaming license.

Okada, who still is on the Wynn board , had asked that lawyers for Wynn fly to Hong Kong. Gonzalez ruled in June that Okada had to sit for the deposition .
