Teacher’s aide at special needs school accused of child abuse

A teacher’s aide at the Variety School for special needs students was arrested Tuesday on charges of felony child abuse and misdemeanor battery.

Lachell James was "immediately removed from the classroom" after officials received evidence of inappropriate conduct, Clark County School District spokeswoman Amanda Fulkerson said in a statement.

The district did not provide details about the allegations.

"It is unconscionable of any adult to mistreat a child, but the circumstances around this case are especially alarming," Fulkerson said.

James will be suspended without pay and could be fired upon approval by an arbitrator or after being in jail for six days, the district spokeswoman said.
