Son arrested, charged with murder in his father’s slaying

A 19-year-old man was arrested on a murder charge Sunday after his father was shot and killed during a family argument in the northeast valley.

According to a Las Vegas police arrest report, Juan Tarelo Jr. shot and killed Juan Tarelo Sr., 41, about 3:30 p.m. Sunday at their home at 868 Ute Lane, near Bonanza Road and Nellis Boulevard.

Tarelo Jr. told homicide detectives he was angry that his pregnant girlfriend, Michelle Martinez, would not cook him something to eat, the report said. He locked himself in their bedroom and began tearing the room apart.

Tarelo Sr. later entered the room and told his son that Martinez was going to leave the home but needed to grab her things, according to the report.

The argument intensified, and his father grabbed him by the throat and said, “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out!” according to the report.

Tarelo Jr. then took a handgun from a dresser drawer and shot his father once in the chest, while his sister and his girlfriend watched, the report said.

When police arrived, Tarelo Jr. was holding his father’s head and pleading for paramedics to help his father, according to the report.

Tarelo Sr. died at University Medical Center.

Tarelo Jr. told police he was worried his father would beat him, but he never feared for his life.
