Shooting death of boy either accident or suicide, police say

A young boy died Tuesday in a southwest valley home after a shooting investigators believe was either an accident or a suicide, Las Vegas police said.

The identity of the boy was not released. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are being investigated, said Bill Cassell, a police spokesman. The boy was reported to be 9 or 10 years old.

The shooting was reported at 2:45 p.m. on the 5800 block of Ponderosa Way, near Russell Road and Jones Boulevard.

Homicide Lt. Lew Roberts said that as of 6:15 p.m., the investigation was ongoing. He said investigators have narrowed down the cause of the shooting as either an accident or a suicide. Personnel with the department’s Abuse and Neglect Detail also responded to the scene.
