Secretary of state warns of solicitations from fraudulent companies

Secretary of State Ross Miller on Tuesday warned local businesses owners to beware of solicitations from companies that falsely claim to be registered agents of his office.

In a statement, Miller said his office has received complaints of businesses receiving pre-filled forms that seem to be from the secretary of state’s office but aren’t. The forms ask for signatures from the businesses and fees to update the businesses’ corporate status.

Miller said statutes exist to stop this activity and that people practicing deceptive trade may face restraining orders and civil penalties. Miller urged businesses to read any documents before signing and sending forms and fees to someone other than the secretary of state or their current registered agent.

Nevada businesses can check their status by using the secretary of state’s free business search at http://nvsos.gov.
