Sands spokesman Reese won’t have to testify before hearing

Las Vegas Sands spokesman Ron Reese can avoid the court fight between the company and Steven Jacobs, former CEO of Sands China, at least in the near term.

Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez turned down the request to question Reese in the run-up to a sanctions hearing next week against Sands, saying Reese was not involved.

The hearing will focus on whether the company hid electronic evidence from the case for about a year, saying in court that Macau data privacy law governed what could be done with a hard drive even though it was in Las Vegas the entire time.

Jacob’s attorneys wanted to question Reese in a deposition about an Aug. 9 Wall Street Journal story to see if he leaked information about an inquiry conducted by the law firm of O’Melveny & Myers .

The Wall Street Journal story quoted an unidentified source as saying the O’Melveny & Myers made a presentation on its findings to the Nevada Gaming Commission. The story said that the newspaper’s reporters had reviewed a preliminary copy of it.

Reese, in written statement, denied leaking the report.
