Sandoval will pick one of three lawyers to fill court vacancy

The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection submitted three names on Wednesday to Gov. Brian Sandoval who will appoint one of those named to the 8th District judgeship vacated by Judge Jackie Glass.

The finalists are Michael Davidson, 57, of Las Vegas, with the firm Kolesar & Leatham; Carolyn Ellsworth, 56, of Las Vegas, with the Nevada secretary of state’s office; and Adriana Escobar, 52, of Las Vegas, with the Nevada attorney general’s fraud unit.

The three were chosen from 16 applicants who went through a public vetting that included interviews, background checks and references.

Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Douglas, the commission chairman, said, "A number of outstanding attorneys applied for this vacancy, and I can say with confidence that whoever Governor Sandoval appoints will be a very competent district judge."

Of the 16 applicants, including one from Northern Nevada, at least five had run for judgeships and lost.

The newly appointed judge must run and win in the 2012 election to retain the seat.

Glass, who resigned in June, is hosting a nationally syndicated court TV program called "Swift Justice."
